Vijaydurg

Vijaydurg fort which lies approx. 47 nautical miles south of Jaigad was originally built by Raja (King) Bhoj in 1208 and was named Gheriah. It is located on the coast, and has an entrance hollowed out in it to accommodate entry of a vessel from the sea. In 1698 Maratha Admiral Kanhoji Angre located his first Naval Base and Dry Dock here and renamed it Vijaydurg which means ‘Victory Fort’, Vijaydurg lies in the famous Alphonso mango belt and boasts a mango research institute that has developed hybrid mango varieties like the “Ratna” and “Kesar”.
